Academic Nitra 2021 in online space
Due to the pandemic situation, the members of the festival committee meet online. Preparations for the virtual version of AN 2021 are currently underway.

Preparations for the “Academic Nitra 2021” (AN 2021) are in full swing, although the development of the situation in the spread of covid-19 is unfavorable. The pandemic thwarted our plans and preparations last year, so in 2020, for obvious reasons, there was a pause in long tradition of organizing AN and the International Festival of Non-Professional Academic Folk Groups did not take place.

However, since the end of the last year, the Committee of the Academic Nitra 2021 has been working hard to ensure that the tradition continues and the 42nd annual competition show of the best singing, dancing and music art of university students - folklorists from Slovakia and abroad - will finally take place in 2021. The festival is scheduled for July 2021.

Since members of the AN Committee cannot meet "live", work meetings are held online. Intensive work has been done on the preparations for the financial and organizational background of the festival and its promotion.

However, there is no doubt that the development of the corona crisis will affect this year´s festival as well. Due to the unpredictability of the development of the pandemic situation and the level of strictness of future measures in July 2021, the AN 2021 Committee is working with the online version of the organization of this festival. Academic folk groups have not been working due to the pandemic for more than a year.  In 2020, the final-year students finished their performance in these groups and in April of this year, the next generation of graduates is planned to leave. Without the experienced folklorists on whom the current repertoire of ensembles was built, even with a new wave of younger students, but still without more than a year of training, folk ensembles are not able to prepare new high-quality competition programs.
Taking this into account in the virtual form of AN festival, registered university folk groups from Slovakia and abroad are asked to send to the festival committee recordings of their competition performances not older than 5 years. Jury evaluation and awarding of prizes will take place online. The fact that the festival will use the online space gives opportunity to make it available to a much larger audience.

Our university has taken over the baton of the festival
Even though the 42nd international academic festival of non-professional folk ensembles Academic Nitra 2020 will not start until July, the “baton” reminding Nitra and Constantine the Philosopher University of their pleasant but endless organizational duties has been passed on to our hands. At a gala concert at the Jozef Gregor Tajovský Theater, the Rector of the Technical University in Zvolen Prof. Rudolf Kropil handed the baton off to doc. PaedDr. Miroslav Tvrdoň, PhD., CPU's Vice-Rector for External Relations and Social Affairs. It was the Zvolen university which, along with its partners, organized the last festival of academic folk ensembles, the Academic Zvolen 2019.

“What did I feel when I was handed off the baton? Mainly this sense of immense responsibility to put together an event worthy of being called an important celebration of folklore. I felt it was my duty, our duty, to ensure that Slovak and international folk ensembles as well as the audience and all folklore lovers would enjoy their time at our festival,” doc. Miroslav Tvrdoň said.
This festival has become a showcase of the best Slovak and international academic folk ensembles. From the 5th to 11th July 2020 Nitra and Constantine the Philosopher University will become home to young folklorists from far and wide. These dancers, singers, and musicians will compete for awards at the festival Academic Nitra 2020. Nitra inhabitants and visitors to the city can look forward to superb performances of Slovak and international folk ensembles which will take place at two evening contests and a gala event at the Andrej Bagar Theater. The festival will also host a folk parade through the city and many accompanying events.
